For a few years now, people have been telling me I need to check out The
Sandwich Club Café. I tried several times, but at first couldn?t find it.
The address is Conway, but it?s east of Coastal Carolina University and
that?s not where I was looking.

Then I found it, but I stopped by after 4 p.m. and they were closed.

In the meantime, more and more readers were telling me, ?You NEED to stop by
Sandwich Club. They have an INCREDIBLE crab cake. You?ll love it!?

Finally, Thursday, I made it. And readers, you are SO right! The crab cakes
are full of sweet lump crab meat. They?re truly luscious.

The sides on my crab cake plate were also delicious because Pam Salins, who
is a partner the restaurant with her husband, Steve Salins, comes in at 7:30
every morning to make fresh cole slaw, macaroni salad, shrimp salad, potato
salad and fruit salad. The couple are originally from Maryland.

?We?re a dying breed,? Steve said. ?There?s not many who?ll come in that
early and make all that food homemade. We don?t just open a carton.?

That devotion to making dishes from scratch is what has given the restaurant
an extremely large and loyal customer base. The location in the Food Lion
shopping center between Horry-Georgetown Technical College and Conway
Hospital is convenient for students and medical professionals, and they come
in droves.

?No tourists ever find us,? Steve said. ?We have a big base of customers. We
do a lot of carry-out. The hospital gives us big orders. And when CCU is in
[session], we?re slammed. It?s almost uncontrollable with a line out the
door for three or four hours. Those kids from up north, they know what a
real deli is all about.?

In addition to fantastic crab cakes and shrimp salad, there are many, many
grilled sandwich choices that are served on sub rolls made in New York.
There are Tuna Melt, Corned Beef Delight, Taylor Pork Roll, and specialties
like the Treasury (hot roast beef, mushrooms, melted Cheddar and mayo on a
garlic hoagie) and the Pizza Hoagie (pepperoni, provolone, oregano, Parmesan
and marinara).

Meats are either Boar?s Head or baked in-house.

You can get turkey and bacon on a croissant, egg salad on country wheat or
salami on a Kaiser roll. There?s a Veggie Wrap featuring Romaine lettuce,
and a Buffalo Chicken Club Wrap with bacon, Jack cheese, Romaine and either
blue cheese or Ranch dressing.

Several of the homemade deli salads can come on a salad plate, and there are
also low carb plates such as one with Philly Steak meat, provolone, lettuce,
tomato, peppers, boiled egg and cantaloupe.

Sandwich Club Café also offers breakfast and weekend brunch, from sandwiches
to a build-your-own-breakfast special.

For dessert there?s no need to look farther than Pam?s brownies. Generously
sliced, fudgy, get-your-hands-off-my-dessert brownies.

The Sandwich Club Café-Deli is at 2270 U.S. 501, Conway, and the number is
347-0035. They?re open from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays through Fridays, and
8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays.
